Let (R, m) be a local commutative ring. Suppose that m is principal and that m^2 = 0. We give a complete description of the cellular lattice of perfect chain complexes of modules over this ring.

In this paper we prove certain properties of cellular and acyclic classes of chain complexes of modules over a commutative Noetherian ring. In particular we show that if X is finite and belongs to some cellular class C then \Sigma^n H_X also belongs to C, for every n.

For certain nonlinear elliptic PDE problems in two dimensions, the classical isoperimetric inequality produces a sharp inequality that violates a Pohozaev identity except for radial symmetric, decreasing solutions. A generalized version of this technique is used here to prove radial symmetry of curl-free Ginzburg-Landau vortices.

Uniqueness results are established for time-independent finite-energy electromagnetic fields which solve the nonlinear Maxwell--Born--Infeld equations in boundary-free space under the condition that either the charge or current density vanishes. In addition, it is also shown that the simpler Maxwell--Born equations admit at most a unique stationary finite-energy electromagnetic field solution, without the above condition. In these theories of electromagnetism, the following physical...

For classical Hamiltonian N-body systems with mildly regular pair interaction potential it is shown that when N tends to infinity in a fixed bounded domain, with energy E scaling quadratically in N proportional to e, then Boltzmann's ergodic ensemble entropy S(N,E) has the asymptotic expansion S(N,E) = - N log N + s(e) N + o(N); here, the N log N term is combinatorial in origin and independent of the rescaled Hamiltonian while s(e) is the system-specific Boltzmann entropy per particle, i.e....

The classical Maxwell--Born--Infeld field equations coupled with a Hamilton--Jacobi law of point charge motion are partially quantized by coupling the Hamilton-Jacobi phase function with an amplitude function, which combines with the phase function into a single complex wave function satisfying a relativistic Klein--Gordon equation self-consistently coupled to the evolution equations for the electromagnetic fields with generic point source (explicitly worked out for one particle; options for...

A weak law of large numbers is established for a sequence of systems of N classical point particles with logarithmic pair potential in $\bbR^n$, or $\bbS^n$, $n\in \bbN$, which are distributed according to the configurational microcanonical measure $\delta(E-H)$, or rather some regularization thereof, where H is the configurational Hamiltonian and E the configurational energy. When $N\to\infty$ with non-extensive energy scaling $E=N^2 \vareps$, the particle positions become i.i.d. according to...

In the semi-classical limit, the quantum mechanics of a stationary beam of counter-streaming relativistic electrons and ions is described by a nonlinear system of finite-temperature Thomas-Fermi equations. In the high temperature / low density limit these Thomas-Fermi equations reduce to the (semi-)conformal system of Bennett equations discussed earlier by Lebowitz and the author. With the help of a sharp isoperimetric inequality it is shown that any hypothetical particle density function which...

The original Jeans dispersion relation and instability criterion are derived by a mathematically well-defined limiting procedure. The procedure highlights Jeans' physical reasoning and vindicates the (in)famous ``Jeans swindle.'' A second, independent procedure is stated which yields the same result.

In this paper a convergent series expansion is constructed to solve the prescribed mean curvature equation for n-dimensional hypersurfaces in n+1 dimensional Euclidean or Minkowskian space(time) which are graphs of a smooth real function u, and whose mean curvature function H is not too large in Hoelder norm, and integrable. Our approach is inspired by the Maxwell-Born-Infeld theory of electromagnetism in Minkowski spacetime, for which our method yields the first systematic way of explicitly...

The mean-field thermodynamic limit is studied for a class of isolated Newtonian N-body systems whose Hamiltonian admits several invariants of motion. It is shown that the macrostates of individual members of a statistical equilibrium ensemble are not necessarily themselves in a state of global thermal equilibrium in the strict sense. Yet they are always locally in thermodynamic equilibrium, and always global maximizers of the pertinent maximum entropy principle.

Eighty years after de Broglie's, and a little more than half a century after Bohm's seminal papers, the de Broglie--Bohm theory (a.k.a. Bohmian mechanics), which is presumably the simplest theory which explains the orthodox quantum mechanics formalism, has reached an exemplary state of conceptual clarity and mathematical integrity. No other theory of quantum mechanics comes even close. Yet anyone curious enough to walk this road to quantum mechanics is soon being confused by many misleading...

The non-relativistic bosonic ground state is studied for quantum N-body systems with Coulomb interactions, modeling atoms or ions made of N "bosonic point electrons" bound to an atomic point nucleus of Z "electron" charges, treated in Born--Oppenheimer approximation. It is shown that the (negative) ground state energy E(Z,N) yields the monotonically growing function (E(l N,N) over N cubed). By adapting an argument of Hogreve, it is shown that its limit as N to infinity for l...

A fully consistent classical relativistic electrodynamics with spinless point charges is constructed. The classical evolution of the electromagnetic fields is governed by the nonlinear Maxwell--Born--Infeld field equations, the classical evolution of the point charges by a many-body Hamilton--Jacobi law of motion. The Pauli principle for bosons can be incorporated in the classical Hamilton--Jacobi formalism. The Cauchy problem is explained and illustrated with examples. The question of...
